Tracy Wilson Mourning is a mentor, designer, broadcast journalist, motivational speaker, soon-to-be published author, loving mother and wife. She is a Howard University graduate who majored in Broadcast Journalism. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, Tracy is a proud resident of the South Florida community. She has dedicated herself to the young women of the Honey Shine Mentoring Program, a program of Alonzo Mourning Charities, which she founded in 2002. The mission of the Honey Shine Mentoring Program is to encourage the balance of mind, body and soul in girls and women by providing nurturing experiences that enlighten their paths and empower their future. The program provides ongoing guidance through bi-weekly workshops and a four-week summer camp. Tracy is currently working to expand the program across the country.
Earlier this year, the Miami-Dade School Board announced the decision to name a new high school after Tracy and her husband, Alonzo in recognition of their positive affects the couple have on youth and education. The Mourning’s were on hand for the first day of the 2009/2010 school year to welcome students to Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High Biscayne Bay Campus.
Aside from her community endeavors, Tracy continues to work in the field of journalism and public speaking. Tracy is a familiar face on television having been an on-air correspondent for NBA TV, appeared in various local NBC segments and in print where she was a featured columnist for Mother & Daughter magazine. She is called upon regularly as guest speaker and has done so for Cleanse Miami 2-Day Journey with Dr. Etti Ben-Zion, South Florida’s Leading Detox Doctor; the Junior League of Ft. Lauderdale; the Work-Life Balance Conference 2009, and many more. In 2005, Tracy had the opportunity to showcase her acting skills, to a sold-out show, when she played a part in the Vagina Monologues, produced by Casa Valentina, at the historic Gusman Theater for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami, alongside a long list of local celebrities, activists and dignitaries.
As an entrepreneur, Tracy is the founder of Honey Child, a lifestyle brand that includes apparel designed for the goddess, soul mate, mother and friend that she believes all women are. Honey Child has been featured in magazines such as In Style, Essence and Ocean Drive. In addition, Tracy has launched Myka and Me, a natural hair and body product line inspired by her daughter, Myka.
Tracy has served on several boards such as Miami Children’s Museum, United Way of Miami-Dade, and The National Basketball Wives Association’s Behind the Bench. She was event chair for Russell Simmons’ Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation Arts for Life Miami Beach in 2007. She has been recognized with numerous awards including: in 2005 the National Council of Negro Women honored Tracy and Alonzo Mourning with the Family of the Year award; in 2007 she was awarded the Champions for Children Award by the Children’s Trust; also in 2007, Tracy received the Orange Bowl Keith Tribble Trailblazer Award; in 2009 Tracy was honored with the Community Service Award by the Dade Schools Athletic Foundation.
Tracy is a proud mother to son Trey, daughter Myka, and the newest addition of a baby boy – Alijah. She is grateful for the higher power that guides her. Her spirituality gives her the peace and empowerment that is reflected in the ideologies of the Honey Shine Mentoring Program and Honey Child.
