Honey Bugs! Honey Bugs!

Honey Bugs! Honey Bugs!

If you’ve ever attended a Honey Shine Workshop or field trip, you know that Staff and Mentors lovingly grab the attention of our Honey Bugs by saying “Honey Bugs! Honey Bugs!” and the girls respond in unison with “Give Me Love!” This is the way we, at Honey Shine promote acknowledgement and respect.

During the first half of the 2015-2016 program year, Honey Bugs and Mentors have enjoyed thought-provoking “Aspire to Shine” Workshops, and engaging, service-oriented field trips.

Workshops have centered on the Honey Shine values of Knowledge, Responsibility, Community and Faith. With the theme for September being “I Aspire to Begin,” Honey Bugs were welcomed back to the Carrollton School to receive new backpacks filled with school supplies. Thanks to our partners at Ryder, the Honey Shine Back to School initiative was a success! Later in the month of September, Honey Bugs took a trip to Forever21 in Aventura Mall, where they received a lesson in financial literacy as they had the chance to shop for school clothes!

October’s theme was “I Aspire to Serve My Community,” during the Workshops for this month, Honey Bugs participated in service-oriented empowerment sessions. The girls discussed the importance of self-image with Ms. Angela Bailey; the portrayal of women of color and hair in the media with Ms. Mahisha Delinger, Founder of Curls. Honey Bugs closed out the month by cleaning up the beach at Oletta State Park!

“I Aspire to be Thankful,” was the theme for November, with Honey Bugs attending sessions dedicated to the power of having an attitude of gratitude!
