The evening also garnered support of many other like-minded individuals including Mara Brock Akil, the ladies of Behind the Bench and the Hip Hop Sisters Foundation who announced their partnership with Honey Shine and the organization’s expansion to California. In an era where young women aren’t always presented with the best role models in print, television and media it is refreshing to see organizations investing in the future of the young women that will be the leaders of tomorrow. We are losing our youth at a much faster rate much sooner than ever before. They are dealing with issues that would break even the strongest of us and many times their sadness is seemingly all-encompassing. MC Lyte explained, “Many young women are unhappy because they are unaware of the power they have.” It is our collective responsibility to help us. Who are our children’s influencers and what responsibility do they hold? “The earlier we start the better we are” – Gayle King. Influence is one of the most powerful forces on earth because with influence you can move the masses. This power has brought us to this very point and organization’s like Honey Shine, founded by Tracy Mourning was created out of her desire to use the power of her influence to help young women who don’t have a strong woman like her mother or her caretaker to guide their lives.

There was no better way to kick-start All Star Weekend than in fun, charity and service while sipping Truvee wines, rocking out with MC Lyte and enjoying all the event had to offer. All children are our children and each one of us has a responsibility to do all that is in our power to ensure we secure their futures because our collective future is dependent on it.
